What is Pediatric Health Care?

Health departments and clinics have doctors and nurses who can care for the health of your child.

Well Child Visits

Preventive health services to children from birth to 21 years of age are available. Your child’s vision, speech, hearing; and development can be screened. Your child can be checked for anemia, lead poisoning, chronic diseases. You can also get dietary counseling for your child.

Services are provided through well child and pediatric primary care clinics. Routine screenings and health guidance are provided by nursing, medical, social work and nutrition staff in well child clinics.

Children are seen for a regular schedule of visits based on the guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatrics. 

Sick Child Visits

Pediatric primary care at local health departments may be a health care option for your child. Children can get treated for common illnesses, and their long-term health needs can be managed. Doctors will refer children as necessary to specialists.

Most but not all local health departments provide primary care to children. Please contact your local health department before going.

Who is Eligible?

Eligibility criteria are established by each participating county health department.
