Forensic Tests for Alcohol: Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT) Program Awareness

The Forensic Tests for Alcohol Branch developed and implemented the state's first Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT) Mobile Unit Program in 1996. The BAT Program has since then played a major role in public health service by assisting law enforcement officers at DWI checking stations, and in raising awareness of the dangers of impaired driving at education and safety events. Specific information is accessible through the BAT Program Brochure (PDF, 1.4 MB).

BAT Coordinators work within a specific region to educate the public, law enforcement professionals, judicial officials, and community leaders at educational and highway safety events. These opportunities are used to heighten awareness of the dangers associated with drug and alcohol use and abuse, and driving while impaired. Some of the more common educational or safety events include organized talks at high schools, public health forums, the North Carolina State Fair, and community events. For access to guidance and sample application forms relevant to the BAT Mobile Unit Program, view the BAT Mobile SOP Manual for External Use (PDF, 11 MB).

The BAT Program receives approximately 450 - 500 requests per year to participate in enforcement and educational events. Approximately 35% of those requests are for educational events that promote safety across the state.

The BAT Program is invested in partnerships with advocacy groups against underage drinking or impaired driving. Some of these groups that focus on young adults in high school and driver’s education classes across the state include Talk It Out, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and the B.R.A.K.E.S. (Be Responsible and Keep Everyone Safe) program. As a result, BAT Coordinators can disseminate themes and messages on the dangers of drinking and driving among young adults in North Carolina.

Each BAT mobile unit displays the logos of “Booze It & Lose It” and “.08 It’s The Law”.
